Bluetooth Controller for Steam Link: Full Compatibility Guide (2026)
A Bluetooth controller for Steam Link is not one compatibility question — it is three stacked on top of each other: which Steam Link client you are running, which controller you are holding, and which connection mode that controller is in when it pairs. Pick the wrong end of that stack and you get the classic failure — the pad appears in a Bluetooth menu, connects successfully, and then does nothing useful inside Steam.
"Steam Link" now describes at least six different platforms. There is the original 2015 hardware box, which Valve still ships firmware for. There are the apps for Android phones and tablets, Android TV and Google TV, and Fire TV. There is the Apple client covering iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro. There is the Raspberry Pi client for Pi 3, 3+, 4 and 5. There are the Windows, Linux and macOS Remote Play clients. And there is a Steam Deck acting as a Remote Play client for another machine.
Each of those runs a different input stack. The 2015 box does its own Bluetooth pairing against a fixed, Valve-maintained controller list. Android, Apple, Linux and Windows clients pair through the operating system first and hand whatever they detect to Steam Link afterwards. That single difference explains most of the contradictory advice circulating about this topic.

Pairing Is Not Compatibility — The Myth to Clear First
The single most expensive assumption in this topic is that a controller that connects will work. Bluetooth pairing confirms a radio link. It says nothing about how the device presents itself to Steam Input.
A pad can connect and then enumerate as a keyboard, present the wrong HID profile, lose analog trigger travel, swap ABXY labels, stay invisible to Steam Input entirely, or produce doubled inputs. A current example makes the point: Valve's new Steam Controller can pair to an Apple TV at the operating-system level while being presented to Steam Link as a keyboard in that user's configuration. Treat very new controllers as version-sensitive rather than assuming that successful pairing guarantees correct gamepad enumeration.
Controller operating mode matters as much as the model name on the box. On multi-protocol pads:
- XInput normally appears as an Xbox-style controller — usually the least friction inside Steam.
- DirectInput / HID often appears as a Generic Gamepad, with no vendor profile.
- Switch mode can enable gyro, but may relabel buttons and change how features are handled.
- Android HID works on phones and TVs, but does not have to behave like an Xbox pad on Windows.
The GameSir G7 Pro makes this concrete: its wired mode is an Xbox controller, its 2.4 GHz and wired modes on PC are the PC path, and its Bluetooth path is built around Android. "The G7 Pro works over Bluetooth" is true on exactly one of those three clients.
Valve's own wording — that other input devices may work even if they are not officially supported — is the correct framing. It is not the same statement as "any Bluetooth controller works."
Original Steam Link Hardware (2015): The Box That Still Receives Firmware
The 2015 box is a dedicated HDMI streaming appliance: it streams video and audio from a host PC while returning controller input over the network. Valve no longer sells it new and strongly recommends wired networking for it. It carries built-in Bluetooth plus three USB ports, and controllers pair directly from the box's own Bluetooth settings.
The pairing procedure for a DualShock 4 is the historical template: open the box's Bluetooth settings using another input device, hold PS + Share until the controller flashes, select it from the list, then confirm. Other pads follow the same shape with their own pairing combos.
Valve's published controller list for the box includes the Steam Controller, Xbox One wired, Xbox One S wired or Bluetooth, Xbox Elite Series 2 wired or Bluetooth, Xbox 360 (wired or wireless receiver), DualShock 4 wired or Bluetooth, Nintendo Switch Pro wired, Logitech F310/F510/F710, Razer Kishi and Raiju, and the SteelSeries Stratus Duo, alongside keyboard and mouse. Valve explicitly notes that other devices may work as well.
What makes this box surprising is that it is still maintained. Stable build 924 shipped on July 15, 2026. Build 916 fixed input latency during controller rumble plus PowerA and PDP initialization failures and a Bluetooth disconnect bug. Build 918 specifically improved Bluetooth latency on 8BitDo controllers running older firmware. Build 920 added GameSir Super Nova Xbox-mode support, and builds 923–924 added or fixed PDP, Turtle Beach and Horipad controllers.
Two consequences follow:
- Valve's static list is narrower than reality. It predates the Series X|S generation, the DualSense, the DualSense Edge and most current 8BitDo and GameSir products. Firmware delivery proves practical handling of devices the page never names, so treat modern pads as version-dependent rather than validated or rejected.
- "Bluetooth" is not a guarantee even on a Valve controller. The new Steam Controller cannot use Bluetooth with the 2015 box at all. It requires the Steam Controller Puck or a USB cable, because the controller's BLE implementation needs larger packet handling than the older radio supports.
For this client specifically: buy from the validated list when certainty matters, keep the box firmware current, and accept that anything newer than the list is a practice-based bet.
Android, Google TV and Fire TV Clients
Valve supports Android 5.0+ on phones, tablets and TVs, and Fire TV clients sit in the same family. Valve names the Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9+, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile as supported, with the usual caveat that other devices may work — a list that is plainly narrower than the modern Android controller ecosystem.
Android phone or tablet:
- Put the controller into its Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device (or the OEM equivalent).
- Select the controller.
- Launch Steam Link.
- Once connected to Steam, open Steam → Settings → Controller or the controller test view and confirm every expected axis and button registers.
Google TV / Android TV:
- Open Settings → Remote & Accessories → Pair remote or accessory.
- Put the controller into pairing mode.
- Select it from the discovered-device list.
- Confirm the pair, then launch Steam Link.
Two behaviors are worth knowing before you blame the pad. First, the Steam Link app consumes whatever game-controller profile Android exposes, so the same hardware in XInput-like mode and in Switch or Android HID mode can behave differently on identical hardware. Second, rumble is the least portable feature on this client: there are recurring reports of Bluetooth Xbox, DualSense and 8BitDo controllers delivering correct inputs but no vibration on some Android TV and Fire TV combinations. That is a client-and-OS issue, not a universal absence of rumble support.
Google TV accepts several Bluetooth devices including game controllers, though Google publishes no fixed numeric maximum. Only one Bluetooth audio device can be connected at a time, which matters if you are using wireless headphones.
iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
Valve's Remote Play distribution covers iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro. Valve's own Steam Link documentation lists the Steam Controller, MFi pads, Xbox One S on iOS/tvOS 13+, DualShock 4 on iOS/tvOS 13+ and the Razer Kishi.
Apple's native controller layer is broader than that list and explicitly supports the Bluetooth Xbox Wireless Controller, the Xbox Elite Series 2, the DualShock 4 and the DualSense on Apple TV. A modern pad can therefore work on an Apple client because tvOS supports it, even though Valve's own documentation never names it.
Pairing routes: on iPhone and iPad, put the pad in pairing mode and use Settings → Bluetooth. On Apple TV, hold the TV button on the Siri Remote to open Control Center, choose Game Controllers, and select the controller — Bluetooth accessories can also be managed under Settings → Remotes and Devices → Bluetooth.
Multiplayer limits on Apple TV: up to four Bluetooth game controllers can be connected simultaneously. Apple documents that this drops to one controller if a Bluetooth audio accessory is active at the same time. Other Apple devices have environment-dependent limits.
As on Android, treat brand-new hardware cautiously: pairing at the OS level does not guarantee that Steam Link receives a properly enumerated gamepad rather than a keyboard or a partially mapped HID device.
Samsung Tizen and LG webOS: What Is No Longer There
Samsung's native Steam Link application is no longer a current delivery method. Samsung announced in November 2023 that the app would be discontinued because its associated plugin was no longer supported. Do not look for Steam Link in a Samsung Tizen store.
No official native Valve Steam Link client for LG webOS was verified. The practical TV route is an external client device instead:
- A Google TV or Android TV box or stick.
- An Apple TV.
- A Raspberry Pi running the Steam Link client.
- A Steam Deck or PC connected to the display.
Controller pairing then follows the external client's rules, not the TV manufacturer's old Steam Link integration — which is why a controller that worked with an old TV-era setup may now need to be paired somewhere else entirely.
Raspberry Pi, Desktop Clients and Steam Deck
Raspberry Pi. Valve's Remote Play support covers Pi 3, 3+, 4 and 5. The Pi-specific guidance recommends wired networking, with 5 GHz wireless as a workable but not recommended option. Officially listed controllers include the Steam Controller, Xbox wired controllers, DualShock 4 including Bluetooth, wired Switch Pro, several Razer pads and the SteelSeries Stratus Duo.
Bluetooth pairing on a Pi is handled by the Pi's Linux Bluetooth stack, not by a Steam Link-specific radio. USB or a dedicated receiver is the standard fallback when Linux support for a particular pad is unreliable. There is also a distinction that trips people up: "Linux recognizes the controller" is not the same as "Steam Link forwards the controller correctly." That gap shows up most often with generic DirectInput pads and unusual HID implementations.
Windows, Linux and macOS clients. Valve's current Remote Play distribution explicitly includes all three desktop platforms, and ordinary PC-to-PC streaming through Steam works as well. Pair Bluetooth controllers through the operating system first, then open Steam. Desktop clients are the least restrictive environment because Steam Input can see XInput, DirectInput and recognized PlayStation and Nintendo HID devices more directly than mobile or TV middleware does.
Steam Deck as a Steam Link client. A Steam Deck can stream a title installed on another Steam machine, and pairing is handled by SteamOS:
- Open Steam → Settings → Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into pairing mode and connect it.
- Open Settings → Controller to verify identification and test inputs.
- Launch the game and choose Stream instead of installing or playing locally.
SteamOS is the best client for unusual controllers precisely because Steam Input is the platform's native input layer. There is no authoritative universal maximum number of Bluetooth gamepads for a Steam Deck; current community reports show four or more working, alongside reports of instability or regressions when several Bluetooth pads are active at once. If you are building a four-player couch setup, moving one or two pads to USB or a 2.4 GHz receiver is the more predictable architecture.
Controller-by-Controller Compatibility
Valve Steam Controller (2015)
Discontinued, dual trackpads, dual-stage triggers, rear grip inputs and haptic feedback. It originally used Valve's proprietary wireless receiver; a later firmware revision added Bluetooth Low Energy, and that BLE firmware is required to use it with mobile Steam Link clients. The original receiver supports up to four Steam Controllers on one dongle, and the controller can pair directly to the 2015 box without an external receiver at all.
Because Steam detects it as a Steam Controller rather than a generic Xbox pad, Steam Input can use the trackpads and its unusual native inputs. If you buy used, remember that older units may not have the BLE firmware installed.
Valve Steam Controller (2026)
This is a different controller, launched in May 2026. It offers USB-C wired, Bluetooth, and a proprietary 2.4 GHz connection through the included Steam Controller Puck — which Valve recommends for the fastest and most reliable wireless link. It supports two Puck pairing slots plus an independent Bluetooth pairing. The mode LEDs are white for Puck, blue for Bluetooth and green for USB, with distinct startup combos: B + R1 + Steam for Bluetooth, A + R1 + Steam for the right Puck slot, A + L1 + Steam for the left.
Independent measured transport latency for this controller in Steam protocol is approximately 4.12 ms button / 5.08 ms stick over USB, 6.25 ms / 7.75 ms over the Puck, and 7.26 ms / 10.21 ms over Bluetooth. Those are local controller transport figures, not complete Steam Link latency.
The exception that defines this whole guide: Valve states the controller does not work over Bluetooth with the 2015 Steam Link box. Connect it by Puck or USB on that client. Modern PC and SteamOS clients can use Puck, Bluetooth or USB.
Xbox Wireless Controller (Series X|S)
Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth and USB-C wired; AA-powered with roughly 40 hours of advertised runtime; 3.5 mm headset connector; firmware updates through Xbox Accessories. To pair, hold the controller's Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes rapidly, then select Xbox Wireless Controller from the client's Bluetooth menu.
It is broadly supported on Android, iOS, Apple TV, Windows and SteamOS. On the 2015 box, this generation is newer than Valve's explicit list — the very similar Xbox One S Bluetooth controller is the model that is officially validated there — so treat Bluetooth support on the legacy box as partial and version-dependent. Steam detects it as an Xbox/XInput-class controller. Do not expect headset-jack audio to travel over a Bluetooth Steam Link connection, and impulse-trigger behavior is not consistently preserved through generic input forwarding.
Xbox One S Bluetooth Controller
The distinction that matters: not every Xbox One-era controller has Bluetooth, but the redesigned Xbox One S-era controller does. This is one of the safest Bluetooth choices for the original Steam Link box because Valve explicitly lists it, wired or wirelessly over Bluetooth. It presents as an Xbox/XInput device. It is a legacy model now, so availability skews toward third-party and used listings.
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless and USB; four removable paddles; adjustable stick tension and trigger locks; rechargeable battery. Valve's list for the 2015 box names the Elite Series 2 over Bluetooth explicitly.
One expectation to correct: the paddles normally resolve through the controller's own onboard profile into regular Xbox controls. The paddles working does not mean Steam Input sees four additional bindable physical inputs.
Sony DualSense
Sony documents Bluetooth and USB support on Windows 10/11, macOS 11.3+, iOS/iPadOS 14.5+, tvOS 14.5+ and Android 12+. Pair by holding Create + PS until the light bar flashes.
Sony's own feature limits are the important part for Steam Link. Haptic feedback on supported PC titles requires USB and is unavailable on Mac and mobile. Adaptive triggers are game-dependent and not supported on Android mobile. The built-in microphone and speaker are not supported on Mac or mobile. Headset-jack output requires a wired PC or Mac connection and is unavailable on mobile.
Add Steam Link's forwarding layer on top of that and the conclusion is unambiguous: over Bluetooth, expect standard buttons, sticks and triggers, and do not promise PS5-style haptics or adaptive-trigger behavior. Valve's current firmware for the 2015 box includes DualSense and DualSense Edge rumble fixes, which confirms practical handling even though the static list predates the device.
Sony DualSense Edge
Sony documents Bluetooth and USB compatibility with Windows 10/11, iOS/iPadOS 16.4+, macOS 13.3+ and tvOS 16.4+. It adds remappable rear buttons, replaceable stick modules and hardware profiles. Android support is less clearly documented for the Edge than for the standard DualSense.
Treat it as DualSense-class on any Steam Link client, with the same feature caveats. Rear-button and profile functions configured locally remain useful, but Steam Link does not necessarily receive those paddles as independent additional inputs.
Sony DualShock 4
Bluetooth and micro-USB; touchpad; gyroscope and motion sensing; light bar; headset jack; standard vibration. Valve explicitly lists the DS4 for the 2015 box over both wired and Bluetooth, which makes it one of the strongest known-good legacy options. Genuine new stock is increasingly limited, so treat it as a legacy recommendation rather than a default purchase. On desktop Steam, gyro and touchpad can be used more deeply than most mobile or TV controller APIs allow, so promise ordinary gamepad inputs rather than full advanced-feature passthrough.
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Bluetooth 3.0 plus USB-C, roughly 40 hours of advertised battery, gyroscope and accelerometer, HD Rumble and NFC. Pairing uses the small SYNC button.
Steam Input supports Switch Pro-style input. On the 2015 box, Valve's official page guarantees the controller wired rather than over Bluetooth; current firmware and user reports show Bluetooth operation working in practice, so label it supported in practice rather than originally certified. NFC has no meaningful role on a Steam Link client, and gyro works best when the client preserves the Switch controller identity — do not assume it survives on every mobile client.
Nintendo Joy-Con
Each Joy-Con is an independently addressable Bluetooth controller with motion sensors and HD Rumble, and each consumes its own Bluetooth connection. Combining a left and right Joy-Con into one logical gamepad is more complicated than a Switch Pro Controller and varies by client. The original Steam Link does not list Joy-Con at all. For couch co-op they are technically possible but should not be presented as the low-friction option — a conventional single-device pad avoids the pairing and combining edge cases entirely.
8BitDo Pro 2 (Hall Effect revision)
Bluetooth and USB-C, Hall-effect sticks on the current revision, Switch/XInput/DInput operating modes, two rear paddles, roughly 20 hours of rechargeable battery, motion controls in Switch mode. 8BitDo's current Steam guidance requires firmware v3.06 or newer and recommends D-input over Bluetooth with current Steam. Mode selection is part of troubleshooting here: a pad can pair successfully and still deliver the wrong button map because it was started in an unsuitable mode. Valve's build 918 improved Bluetooth latency on 8BitDo controllers running older firmware, which makes updating the pad firmware especially worthwhile on original Link hardware.
8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller
Bluetooth 5.0, a 2.4 GHz receiver, USB and a charging dock; Hall-effect sticks on this SKU; two rear paddles; motion support in Switch mode. The protocol split is the key detail — over Bluetooth it presents as a Switch Pro-style controller, while the 2.4 GHz receiver or USB can provide an Xbox/XInput profile on PC and SteamOS depending on configuration. There have been reports on original Link hardware of severe Ultimate-series Bluetooth latency or 2.4 GHz reconnect problems, with firmware and client build updates improving some cases.
8BitDo SN30 Pro (Hall Effect revision)
Bluetooth and USB-C, Hall-effect sticks, Switch/XInput/DInput modes, motion in Switch mode, standard vibration, roughly 18 hours of battery. 8BitDo's current Steam requirement is firmware v2.06 or newer. It is a compact Bluetooth option, but detection still depends on the operating mode you select — it is not automatically an Xbox controller just because Steam supports the family. 8BitDo Lite 2
Bluetooth only, Switch and DInput modes, rechargeable, motion functionality in Switch mode, compact and lightweight. Best treated as a secondary pad: the mode you choose changes recognition, button labels and motion support, and some inventory ships through third-party sellers.
GameSir G7 SE
Wired only — no Bluetooth and no 2.4 GHz. Officially positioned for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows, with Hall-effect sticks and Hall triggers, a 3.5 mm audio jack and two rear buttons. On a compatible USB client it presents Xbox/XInput-style controls. It belongs in this guide specifically as a wired fallback: for a fixed living-room setup, a cable eliminates pairing, radio congestion and battery concerns whenever the distance allows.
GameSir G7 Pro
Tri-mode, but the modes are not equivalent: wired is the Xbox path, 2.4 GHz plus wired is the PC path, and Bluetooth is the Android path. TMR sticks, Hall-effect triggers, rear controls, 3.5 mm audio and 1,000 Hz PC polling in supported wired configurations. The Bluetooth path is designed around Android/HID, so on an Android Steam Link client it can work through Android's game-controller layer while appearing as generic HID rather than the Xbox profile that wired or receiver mode exposes. On PC, SteamOS and Steam Deck, use 2.4 GHz or USB.
GameSir Cyclone 2
Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz receiver and USB; TMR sticks; Hall triggers; roughly 860 mAh of battery; motion controls and rear buttons. Detection changes with connection and profile, so prefer the 2.4 GHz receiver or USB where the client supports it and consistency matters more than dongle-free operation.
GameSir T4 Kaleid
USB wired only, with Windows, Switch and Android TV positioning, Hall-effect sticks and triggers, and gyroscope support in the appropriate mode. It is a USB alternative rather than a Bluetooth recommendation, and it is useful specifically for Android TV boxes that expose USB HID correctly and for desktop or Raspberry Pi clients.
GameSir X2 Bluetooth and X3 Pro
The X2 Bluetooth is the wireless telescopic variant of a family that otherwise uses direct USB-C or Lightning connections; it is relevant to Android and iOS phone Steam Link clients and is not a TV-box recommendation. The X3 Pro is a direct-connect USB-C mobile controller with active cooling — the wired mobile alternative, with no controller Bluetooth hop and no gamepad battery pairing step, though the phone still carries the streaming load.
PowerA OPS v3 Pro Wireless
Bluetooth, a proprietary wireless mode and USB wired, with Hall-effect sticks and triggers, six mappable controls, dual rumble, a 1,200 mAh battery marketed around 30 hours, and a PC companion app for configuration and updates. To pair, select Bluetooth mode, hold the documented Home/start control, then hold sync until the indicator flashes rapidly blue and select the controller on the client. Valve's build 916 specifically fixed initialization failures affecting some PowerA and PDP controllers, which makes keeping original Link firmware current especially relevant for this brand.
SCUF Instinct Pro
Built on Xbox controller protocol and normally exposed as an Xbox-class device, with Xbox Wireless/Bluetooth-class connectivity plus USB-C, four integrated rear paddles, hardware profiles, an instant-trigger mode and a 3.5 mm headset connection. Pairing resembles Xbox pairing. Rear paddles usually execute whatever standard Xbox controls are assigned in the onboard profile; Steam Link does not necessarily receive four unique extra paddle inputs.
SCUF Reflex Family
A PS5/DualSense-derived family with Bluetooth and USB and up to four rear paddles depending on the model; Reflex and Reflex Pro retain DualSense-class features, while FPS-oriented variants alter trigger and rumble configuration. For Steam Link purposes, treat the whole family as DualSense-family Bluetooth, with the same caveats about haptics, adaptive triggers, touchpad, gyro and headset passthrough.
Razer Raiju Mobile and Kishi
The Raiju Mobile is a Bluetooth-focused Android controller that Valve explicitly lists among supported devices for the original box, but it is a legacy product and should not be positioned as a purchase recommendation. Current Kishi models are primarily direct-connect phone controllers rather than Bluetooth devices; Valve officially lists Kishi for Android and Apple Steam Link clients, and its main advantage there is eliminating the separate Bluetooth controller hop.
PDP / Victrix Pro BFG for Xbox
A premium modular Xbox/PC controller with wired, receiver and Bluetooth-capable configurations depending on version, plus rear controls and swappable face components. Do not generalize one PDP controller's behavior to the whole brand: build 916 fixed some PDP initialization problems, and build 924 added wired and wireless support for the PDP Afterglow Wave Switch controller specifically.
Logitech F310, F510 and F710
The F310 is USB wired with an XInput/DirectInput hardware switch and no Bluetooth, and it carries official support on the original Steam Link box — its mode selector is genuinely useful for troubleshooting old games and client-specific recognition.
The F710 uses a proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless receiver with XInput/DirectInput support and dual vibration, also officially supported. It is the clearest example of a non-Bluetooth wireless controller that sidesteps a crowded Bluetooth environment entirely.
The F510 is a legacy wired model that Valve still names on the compatibility list; it is relevant mainly as hardware you already own rather than something to buy.

Generic and Unbranded Bluetooth HID Pads
There is no safe brand-wide specification for cheap Bluetooth controllers. They commonly expose one of several identities: generic Bluetooth HID/DirectInput, an Android-specific gamepad profile, XInput emulation, Switch Pro emulation, or keyboard and mouse emulation. The last of those may not appear as a controller at all.
Recurring risks include swapped ABXY mapping, digital-only triggers, no rumble, no gyro, no firmware-update mechanism, poor reconnect behavior and unusual vendor/product identifiers.
